Details
Sociotherapy is an approved method for treating mental disorders. This study aimed to evaluate its role in a scientific journal over the preceding 20 years.
The researchers conducted a systematic analysis of all papers published in Psychiatrische Praxis in 1985/1986, 1995/1996 and 2005/2006.
Over those two decades, the proportion of papers addressing sociotherapeutic topics decreased significantly: one out of four articles dealt with sociotherapy 20 years earlier, compared with only one out of ten in the latest period studied. The range of themes also narrowed; only work rehabilitation and relatives were represented as sociotherapy topics in the journal’s latest issues.
The authors concluded that, in contrast to its clinical value, sociotherapy had lost importance in psychiatric research. They called for multidisciplinary collaboration to strengthen sociotherapy in mental health care research.
