Why can moving between local authority areas complicate support for people receiving care?
Social work practitioners reported that supporting a move takes time and planning, while local variations and potential risks create uncertainty for both practitioners and care recipients. New legal rights may reduce these problems, but local variations will remain.
Details
This study examined social work practice with care recipients choosing to move between local administrative areas in England. Data were collected through interviews with 20 social work practitioners from three areas, using vignettes to seek their views.
Participants reported that supporting relocation requires time and planning, and that they conceptualise the move as a key transition for the person moving. They also reported that relocation exposes both practitioners and care recipients to local variations and potential risks, and therefore uncertainty.
The article concludes that new legal rights for care recipients may reduce these problems, but local variations will remain.
