Researchers explored social connectedness and its associations with self-perceived health among older adults in New Zealand at a population level. They analyzed data from the 2016 Health and Lifestyle Survey, a nationally representative survey conducted through face-to-face interviews.

Among 1,374 respondents, all over age 55, being female, being in an older age group above 70, working full-time or part-time, connecting online with known people, considering cultural connections important and not feeling isolated from others were each significantly and positively associated with positive self-perceived health.

The researchers said the findings underscore older adults’ potential for resilience and the importance of social connectedness for positive health and well-being. They also identified areas that could benefit from intervention and support by health professionals and policy makers.
