How did older adults connect an with their well-being?
Participants described elevated mood, feelings of achievement, and perceived cognitive or physical changes in connection with playing “I Am Dolphin.”
Details
The study aimed to understand older adults’ perceptions of the connections between the exergame intervention “I Am Dolphin” and their subjective well-being. Researchers conducted three focus groups with 14 older adults who had participated in the exergame feasibility study. The semi-structured focus groups were transcribed, coded, and analyzed using deductive and inductive techniques.
Researchers constructed three themes linking gameplay and participants’ subjective well-being: elevated mood through scheduled activity, immersion, and socialization; feelings of achievement, especially following frustration and competition; and perceived cognitive or physical changes. The findings may help researchers better understand how exergames relate to older adults’ well-being. Future investigators could use them to create and implement new exergame interventions.
