Details
This qualitative study focused on the relationships of 33 siblings with their brothers or sisters with visual impairment who were in care at the Robert Hollman Foundation. Participants aged 7 to 22 recounted their daily experiences and perspectives and expressed their feelings in semi-structured individual interviews.
The researchers used thematic analysis within the conceptual framework of ‘the new sociology of childhood’. The vast majority of siblings showed a special relationship with their brother or sister, characterized by unconditional love and a willingness to help. They expressed emotions including happiness, empathy, sorrow and sadness, and described how being a sibling of a child with visual impairment shapes their attitudes. The findings also highlighted a number of needs among some participants.
