AI-supported applications are becoming more common in health care, including mental health services, where they can be used at different stages and in different roles. The study aimed to explore potential advantages, disadvantages, future roles and outcomes through the views of mental health professionals engaged with AI.
Researchers conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with 13 mental health professionals with expertise in AI, followed by content analysis of the interview transcripts. They concluded that AI use had advantages and disadvantages for clients, the profession and experts.
The study emphasized four findings. Participants tended to view AI use in mental health services positively. They identified greater satisfaction, wider availability of services, and reductions in expert-driven problems and workload among the main advantages. They said AI could not replace a clinician but could function as an assistant. They were skeptical that AI would radically transform mental health services. They also expressed limited views on ethical and legal issues involving data ownership, the ‘black box’ problem, algorithmic bias and discrimination.
The researchers acknowledged that the study had limitations, but expected AI to play an increasingly important role in mental health care services.
